Aster Media Player for Apple TV, iPhone, iPad and Mac
Common questions
What do I need to use Aster?
A Jellyfin server that your device can reach, and a user account on it. Aster is a player: it does not include any media, and it does not provide a server.
How do I connect to my server?
Open Aster and enter your server's address, for example http://192.168.1.20:8096 at home or https://jellyfin.example.com from outside. Then sign in with your Jellyfin username and password. If your server is on the same network, Aster may find it for you.
Aster can't reach my server. What should I check?
Make sure the address includes the port (usually 8096) and the right http or https. Check that you can open the same address in a web browser on the same network. From outside your home, the server needs a reverse proxy or a VPN; Jellyfin's own documentation covers both.
Why does a video buffer or play at low quality?
When a file can't play directly on your device, the server converts it on the fly, which needs CPU or GPU power on the server. Check your Jellyfin user's streaming bitrate limit, and the server's hardware acceleration settings.
Where do Channels, anime openings and disc menus come from?
These features use free companion plugins installed on your Jellyfin server. Your server admin adds them from the Aster plugin repository in Jellyfin's plugin catalogue. TODO: add the repository URL and install steps
Does Aster cost anything?
No. The app and its server plugins are free, with no subscriptions, paid tiers or ads. If you'd like to support development, you can donate.
Is Aster available for Windows or Android?
Not yet. Windows, Android and Android TV versions are in development.
